About Hilton Head
Attractions in Hilton Head
Coastal Discovery Museum
For an introduction to the non-suburban aspects of Hilton Head, stop by this museum on the 2nd floor of the visitors center, to see exhibits on coastal history, archaeology and ecology. This is also the place to arrange nature and history tours, sea-turtle watches during the summer nesting season and dolphin and kayak trips.
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge protects the small slivers of land that have developed between Hilton Head and the mainland. The main island, Pinckney, is 8 miles (13km) long and can be hiked or biked; trails lead through canopied forests and expansive salt marshes.
Fort Mitchel
Fort Mitchel Historical Site is an earthen fort built in 1862 during the Civil War by Federal soldiers to protect Skull Creek (now the Intracoastal Waterway) from a Confederate assault. The fort was later used a base for the Union blockade of Charleston and Savannah.
